What are the types of cars available for learning in?
Some of our students prefer to learn with automatic transmission vehicles, while others prefer to learn with manual transmission vehicles. We can cater to both groups, so the choice ultimately comes down to you. Manual and automatic cars are equally popular across the UK, and your choice is completely to your wishes. Not sure which option to go with? We have expert advisers on hand to help you make a decision. (please note automatic cars are subject to availability). You are just a phone call away from getting expert advice.
Can I start driving lessons without having passed the theory test?
You will generally be advised to hold on your practical driving lessons until you have passed your theory test. That thought process isn’t entirely wrong, as this method will give you adequate background knowledge on using a car before you actually get in the driver’s seat. However, at Smart Drive UK, we believe it’s better to combine both theoretical and practical training. With this, you can immediately see how the things you have learnt in theory can work in practice. Also, you will be better prepared for the theory test when you have started your driving lessons.
How long will it take to complete a lesson?
We know you’d like to find out how long it will take you to complete a lesson, so you can better plan your day. The length of time it will take to complete one lesson is dependent on your learning ability and how the teacher chooses to deliver the lesson. With our system of training, and the way we have structured our courses, however, you can expect to spend around two hours in a session. If you’d like a faster instruction programme, get in touch with us to discuss your preferences.
How often should I have my driving lessons?
We understand that every individual has their unique schedule. Nonetheless, if you are a learner driver, at least two hours of driving training per week can be very beneficial. Depending on your situation, you can decide to keep this schedule. Or we can arrange a more flexible schedule that suits your needs. Many of our clients that have the time prefer opting for back to back training every day, so they can be prepared for their driving test faster. No matter what type of schedule you have, we can arrange something suitable for you.
Can I have lessons in my own car?
You may prefer to undergo your driving training behind the wheel of your own car. This is understandable, and may even be a great idea if you intend on using your own car during your driving test. You may also be looking to familiarise yourself with the vehicle, especially if it’s a new one. Regardless of your reason, you can count on Smart Drive UK for driving lessons and practice in your own car. However, this is only possible if the car is roadworthy, registered, and comprehensively insured. This will be verified through an inspection of your papers by our instructors, and after your insurance company has been notified that the car will be used for driving lessons.
Can I have more than one lesson a week?
If you have enough time for multiple driving lessons per week, you are welcome to take advantage of all the time at your disposal. At Smart Drive UK, we have both fixed and flexible schedules that can accommodate everyone. If your plan is to speed up the learning process by having multiple lessons in a week, we can arrange that. Are manual driving lessons what you are interested in? We can take care of that. When working with our skilled and experienced instructors, manual driving lessons become easy and enjoyable. Our instructors know what they’re doing, and will take time and be patient when teaching you how manual vehicles work. During your manual driving lesson, you’ll be taught how to expertly manoeuvre through traffic, safely change gears, and properly work the clutch. One of the best parts of learning how to drive a manual car is you don’t have to learn to drive an automatic separately. Manual driving lessons cover both.
What is Pass Plus?
Simply put, Pass Plus is a scheme targeted at new drivers in the UK who’ve passed their driving test. Several new drivers shy away from driving on busy roads due to a lack of confidence. Fortunately, after passing your driving test, Smart Drive UK can provide you the skills and knowledge to make you a confident and safe driver on any road. The Pass Plus training scheme will further help by giving you an opportunity behind the wheel to explore major roads outside your regular vicinity. Need more information? Call us to find out more about our Pass Plus scheme.
New Hazard Perception Test
One of the tests you’ll have to undergo before passing the UK driving test is the Hazard Perception Test. You cannot be issued a full driver’s license without passing the Hazard Perception test. A series of videos will be shown during the test, depicting everyday road scenes and a developing hazard. You have to provide appropriate responses to the developing hazard in order to pass the test. To ensure you progress to the practical driving test at the DVLA, we offer our students comprehensive preparation for the Hazard Perception test, which is a precursor. Our trainers will guide you with our collection of Hazard Perception videos and revision questions, to fully prepare you on what to expect.

Required tests you must pass before you are issued your license
Practice to pass
Don’t fret about acing your driving test, as we have a solution to make it easier for you. Smart Drive UK helps you get ready for the DVLA driving test by providing mock theory test practice. Pass our mock test and the DVLA theory practice test will be a breeze, as will the actual theory test that comes afterward.
Take your driving test in Burntoak
To qualify for a driver’s license, you will have to take the official DVLA test. The level of expertise with which we deliver our driving courses ensures that you’ll be able to pass the test after taking any of our driving courses. So many of our customers have passed the test the first time that we are confident you can achieve similar results.
Book your tests
Where do I go to book a test?
It is best to book your driving test directly via the official Gov.UK website. We recommend this because you may end up having to pay more if you use third-party websites. You should only book your driving test if you have already passed the hazard perception test and the theory test. Does this sound confusing? You don’t have to worry too much, because our instructors at Smart Drive UK will be on hand to guide you through it all.
How long do the tests take?
The practical driving test is broken into five parts: an eyesight check, safety questions, driving ability, vehicle reversing, and independent driving. Both automatic and manual transmission is given the same treatment during testing. It only takes about 40 minutes to complete the driving test.
What happens on test day?
Once you have showed your provisional license and theory test certificate, you will be asked to read the digits of a license plate a few feet away to prove you have good eyesight. Upon completion of this stage, you will be tested on your knowledge based on how you answer a couple of show and tell questions. Following this, you will have to prove your skills as a driver and let the examiner know that you are capable of reversing a vehicle and driving on different types of roads effectively and safely. You will have to drive without guidance for about 20 minutes, in which the examiner may ask you to stop to test your ability to manage an emergency. The entire driving test should last about 40 minutes. Although taking the practical driving test can be a nerve-racking experience, it’s important to remember that everything you will encounter during the process is something you have performed several times during the course of your driving lessons.
What follows after the test?
What to expect before obtaining your full driving license
Well done, you have successfully completed your practical driving test. This means you are now qualified to apply for a proper driving license. The DVLA will process your license after receiving the results from your examiner. You should expect to receive this within three weeks of passing the practical driving test. From day one, to the day you get your driving license, Smart Drive UK is always ready to guide you through the process. It is only when you have become a licensed and qualified driver that we can dust our hands.
