What are the types of cars available for learning in?

We have students who only want to learn how to drive in automatic vehicles, just as there are others who prefer to learn in only manual vehicles. Your choice of learning car is ultimately down to you, as we have both types. Your choice of learning with manual or automatic will be a smart one regardless, as both variants can be found all across the UK. If you’re not sure what type of car fits your unique requirements, don’t worry, our experienced staff can help you make the right choice.  (please note automatic cars are subject to availability). Give us a call right away on 07760 767170 for the advice you need.

Is it right to begin my driving lessons before I have passed the theory test?

Generally, you will be advised to pass the theory test before you go for your practical driving lessons. There is nothing wrong with this, as it makes sense to understand how a car works before you get into the driver’s seat. One thing we have learnt in our experience here at Smart Drive UK, however, is that combining theoretical and practical training is always the best bet. The combination creates a synergy which makes it easier to grasp both elements of driving training at the same time. Also, you will be better prepared for the theory test when you have started your driving lessons.

How often should I have my driving lessons?

We are well aware that your schedule is likely different from everyone else’s. Nonetheless, if you are a learner driver, at least two hours of driving training per week can be very beneficial. You can continue with this schedule if you prefer it. Or you can opt for a more flexible schedule, which we’ll be more than happy to accommodate. If you prefer back to back training each day, this can speed up your learning process, and help you prepare for the driving test that little bit faster. No matter what your daily schedule looks like, we have you covered.

What tests do I need to pass before I get my license?

Practice to pass

Why worry about passing your driving test when we have a solution to make it as easy as can be. At Smart Drive UK, our mock theory test practice is tailored to the DVLA driving exam. As long as you can pass this, you can pass the DVLA theory practice test, which is required before you can take the actual theory test.

Driving test in New-Alresford

The driving test is the official DVLA test you have to take before obtaining your driver’s license. The level of expertise with which we deliver our driving courses ensures that you’ll be able to pass the test after taking any of our driving courses. Our customers have proven that our courses are likely to result in a first time pass.

Book your tests

Where do I go to book a test?

The best way to book your driving test is to do so through the official Gov.UK website. Booking through a third-party website can end up costing you more. Before booking the driving test, you must first have passed the hazard perception test and theory test. Sound complicated? The process will get clearer when you work with our instructors at Smart Drive UK, who will guide you from day one.

How long do the tests take?

The driving test has five aspects, which include an eyesight check, driving ability, safety questions, vehicle reversing, and independent driving. Whether you are testing for automatic or manual transmission, it’s the same process. You’ll only spend about 40 minutes taking the actual driving test.

What you should expect on the day of the test.

The first stage will test your eyesight by making you read from a number plate, but before that, you will have to show your theory test certificate and your provisional license. Upon completion of this stage, you will be tested on your knowledge based on how you answer a couple of show and tell questions. Following this, you will have to prove your skills as a driver and let the examiner know that you are capable of reversing a vehicle and driving on different types of roads effectively and safely. You will be asked to drive independently for approximately 20 minutes, and you may be asked to complete an emergency stop. The entire driving test should last about 40 minutes. We understand that you may be extremely nervous during the practical driving test, but remember that you have already encountered all you’ll have to do in your driving lessons.

  Post-Test

Obtaining a full driving license

Well done on getting through your practical driving test. This means you are now qualified to apply for a proper driving license. The results of your practical driving test will be sent to the DVLA, where your license will be processed. Your driving license should be ready within about 21 days of completing the practical driving test. You can count on Smart Drive UK for guidance throughout the process of getting a driver’s license. Until you have been officially licensed as a qualified driver, our job is not done.

Is it sensible to do driving lessons before passing the theory test?

Often students are told by other companies that practical driving lessons shouldn’t be started until the theory test has been completed. It does make sense to understand driving and cars better before commencing practical driving lessons. Smart Drive UK takes a slightly different approach; we believe that the combination of theoretical and practical training at the same time can be more beneficial. The combination creates a synergy that makes it easier to grasp elements of driver training at the same time. Those that start practical driving lessons and then take the theory test tend to pass more easily.

How long should I expect driving lessons to last?

We understand it’s important to plan your driving lessons around your other daily activities. The length of lessons will be decided based on your aptitude and the instructor you work with. The training system that we use, and the structures of the courses we run, mean that most lessons tend to be around two hours. Give us a call if you would like lesson schedules that can get you to your goal faster over a longer period.

How frequently should my driving lessons be done?

We are well aware that your schedule is likely different from everyone else’s. However, progression as you learn to drive is best if you do a minimum of two hours per week. You need to work out whether this works for you. So, tailor the effort to fit two hours a week. You can opt for a more flexible schedule, which will be more than happy to accommodate. We can arrange driving lessons on several days in a row to speed your progress toward your practical driving test. No matter what your daily schedule looks like, we have you covered.

Is it possible to learn to drive in my car?

If you have your car you may feel more comfortable during driving lessons in it. This is not only understandable but also a great idea, especially if you plan to use the car for your driving test. If you have a new car that you are trying to get used to then this can make even more sense. We’re more than happy for you to use your vehicle for driving lessons and for practicing driving at Smart Drive UK.

However, this is only possible if the car is roadworthy, registered and comprehensively insured. Will verify that your car is right for your lessons by inspecting your papers, and your insurance company will have to be notified about the driving lessons in the car. We suggest you move lessons and your vehicle only when it is safe to do so, and we normally recommend that you begin lessons in a dual-controlled car and by your driving instructor.

Then you can go into each new lesson having assimilated the information from the previous one. Your driver training process can also be improved by watching additional resources and your driving instructor can advise you on what to watch.

How do you know when you are ready for your practical driving test?

Your driving instructor will advise you when you are ready to book/take your practical driving test based on your progress level within your driving lessons. They understand what you will need to be able to do to partial test and will be continually assessing you against these levels

Your driving test examiner will probably ask you if you would like your instructor to accompany you on the test. It is normally the case that automatic cars are easier and faster to learn than learning to drive a manual car.
