What Car Models Are Available to Learn in?
If you are a learner driver, there are a number of factors to consider when deciding what type of learner car you require. Most learners prefer fairly small cars; most drivers learn in models like the Vauxhall Corsa, Volkswagen Polo, Ford Fiesta, Fiat 500, Renault Clio, Peugeot 208, Mini, Toyota Aygo, or vehicles of a similar size. Please call or text us today on 07760 767170 and speak to one of our team members to see what preference for a particular make or model we may have.
How Long Is Each Lesson?
A standard lesson is one-hour long. To improve learning, we suggest that your lessons are a two hour duration (double lessons). Our trainers will develop a lesson plan that is tailored to your needs and aptitude. We suggest that you allocate two hours for each lesson. We have found that it gets the best results. When you’re learning a new skill, it’s tempting to push yourself as quickly as possible. But rushing through training can leave you frustrated and unproductive. The best way to learn is to break tasks into bite-sized pieces. This makes it easier to work on a task for the first time and provides a sense of progress during the lessons. This builds momentum and keeps you motivated. The best way to get good at driving is to practice, practice, practice. But the only way that happens is if you spend enough time with the instructor.
How Often Should I Have My Driving Lessons?
When you get behind the wheel, it’s a lot more than just learning how to operate a vehicle, which is why it’s important to have your training scheduled with a driving instructor that can teach you everything from the basic mechanics of driving through defensive driving skills, manoeuvres to road awareness. You need to be confident stopping in traffic on hills and changing lanes on fast-paced dual carriageways. Regular driving helps your driving instructor constantly reinforce learning, and build your skill set.
The most important thing is to schedule your lessons in advance and leave enough time before your test. Lessons may be done on evenings and weekends depending on availability. Your driving instructor will let you know their availability and try to work around you. We normally recommend training for at least 2 hours a week.

Tests and Mock Driving Tests
Should I Begin My Driving Lessons Before Passing The Theory Test?
It is often advised by driving schools that a person take driving lessons after passing the theory test. The main reason offered is to get a better understanding of the technical aspects of a vehicle before getting behind the wheel. However, at Smart Drive UK we believe in a combined program of both theoretical and practical training so that you can immediately see how these concepts apply in real life. Additionally, starting taking driving lessons will help you better prepare for the theory test.
Practice To Pass
Getting your UK driving licence isn’t easy. To ensure that you are well prepared, Smart Drive UK offers practice mock theory tests which reflect the real exam. Practice and you will be able to pass faster!
New Hazard Perception Test/Theory Test
Smart Drive UK takes the hassle out of studying for your UK Driving Theory Test. Our exam preparation software is tailored specifically to the DVSA test and includes sample questions for both the Hazard Perception and Multiple Choice parts of the assessment. You can take our mock tests over and over again, enabling you to practice until you are ready to ace the real test.
We have the expertise and materials at Smart Drive UK to ensure you are able to pass the Hazard Perception Test.
Driving Test In Horsham
To obtain a fully-valid UK driving licence, successful completion of both the theory test and practical test is required. The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) test centres are often under pressure to get through candidates due to the high demand for driving tests in the UK. Candidates in Horsham can have had to wait up to six months for a practical driving test, this is more than the national average. All students are required to take the official practical driving exam before they can receive their driver’s licence. We have an exceedingly high pass rate and can work back from your test date to plan a course that is tailored to your timeframes.
How Do I Book A Test?
You need to pass your theory test and hazard perception test before you book your practical driving assessment. If you get stuck, our teams can help you. We suggest that you don’t waste your time and money using 3rd party sites or advisers; we recommend you book through the official gov.uk website. If you haven’t already booked, your instructor will work with you to help choose a date that is suitable.
How Long Does The Practical Driving Test Last?
The practical driving examination takes about 40 minutes and will cover the five aspects of safety driving: driving ability, safety questions, an eyesight check, independent driving, and vehicle reversing. The tester will assess your capabilities.
When you go for the test you may be required to fill out a form, which will include your personal information and your medical conditions, so leave time for that.
What Can I Expect On Test Day?
To get a license in the United Kingdom you will have to pass an eyesight examination and the knowledge and practical elements of the tests. After the eyesight exam, you will be asked some practical show and tell questions to demonstrate knowledge of the car. The focus will then move to independent driving, which involves proving that you can correctly park the car, demonstrate observation skills, drive safely, and so on. You may required to make an emergency controlled stop during this portion of the practical driving examination. The whole examination should last around 40 minutes.
Although it is natural to be nervous during the practical exam, there is actually nothing to be afraid of because everything you need to do has already been taught by your driving trainer.
Ready for a full driving license
After passing your test it’s time for us to say a big congratulations on passing your practical driving test. You are now qualified to apply for a full driving license. After the results of your practical driving assessment are sent to the DVSA, your license will be processed and delivered no later than three weeks after passing your assessment. At Smart Drive UK, we are always here to help you through the process until you have been officially licensed as a qualified driver.
Extra Driving Lessons Courses
In order to meet the specific needs of each of our customers, we have created diverse driving lesson packages. We have packages for people who already possess a certain degree of driving experience, and we also have packages for drivers who are just beginning their test preparation. Regardless of your objective, and level of experience, you can rest assured that we have a package to teach you to drive affordably.
Each driving course is unique, based on our assessment of your driving competency levels and your goals, and we offer add on training to build extra competencies.
Motorway Driving Instructor Lessons
The motorway can be a very daunting place, especially if you have not driven on one before. Driving on a motorway is very different to other roads and can be overwhelming. Motorway driving lessons are designed to help you understand the rules of the road, how to join a motorway, change lanes and overtake other vehicles safely.
Motorway lessons are ideal if you need to improve your driving skills and build your confidence after taking part in the practical driving test.
What Is Pass Plus?
So you have passed your test, now what? Once you have passed your test and are a fully qualified driver it is important that you gain as much experience as possible and become more confident on the roads. The safest way to do this is with a Pass Plus course.
Pass Plus is designed and developed by the Driving Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) in order to help new drivers gain more skills and experience safely. It is open to all new drivers who have just passed their practical test, or those that passed some time ago, no matter which driving school they trained with. The Pass Plus course consists of modules: motorways, town driving, rural roads, all weather conditions, night driving etc. All of these modules are delivered by an approved Pass Plus driving instructor who will give you the best possible training in each area.
The course has been designed to take place in real traffic situations and so you will be learning while out on the roads rather than in a classroom or other training environment.
Refresher Driving Courses
Refresher driving courses are designed to meet the needs of drivers who, for whatever reason, have not driven for a long period of time. If you have been driving for a number of years, but have not driven for a while, a Refresher driving course is ideal. It’s also suitable for those who have recently passed their driving test but not yet gained much experience.
Refresher driving courses are tailored to suit individual needs and are offered on an hourly basis (we recommend at least two hours). They can be held in any location convenient to learners, so we can incorporate actual routes that may be difficult or intimidating – such as busy junctions and multi-lane roundabouts.
As part of the course, our instructors will assess your current driving ability and highlight areas that need improvement. They will then design a course around these needs. This may include some of the following:
- Car controls/cockpit drill
- Moving off and stopping
- Changing gear/using gears effectively
- Junctions – turning right/left – roundabouts – priority junctions – crossroads
- Braking and steering techniques
- Anticipation/planning/observation skills
- Dealing with hazardous situations such as high speed roads, junctions, and roundabouts
