What are the types of cars available for people like me?

Over the years, we have seen people who prefer to only learn in automatic vehicles, and we have also seen people that love the manual stick. Ultimately, you will determine the choice of car in which you’ll be learning. Manual and automatic cars are equally popular across the UK, and your choice is completely to your wishes. Can’t make up your mind on one choice over the other? You can talk to us right away and we will be delighted to help  (please note automatic cars are subject to availability). Call us right away to get started.

Is it right to begin my driving lessons before I have passed the theory test?

You will generally be advised to hold on your practical driving lessons until you have passed your theory test. This system has it benefits, as you will then know enough about using a car before getting behind the wheel. However, our approach here at Smart Drive UK is to mix theoretical and practical training. The combination creates a synergy which makes it easier to grasp both elements of driving training at the same time. Also, you will be better prepared for the theory test when you have started your driving lessons.

Tests required before licenses are issued

Theory Test Practice

Passing your driving test has just been made easier, so don’t fret. Practice matters, so we offer mock theory test practice ahead of the DVLA driving exam. As long as you can pass this, you can pass the DVLA theory practice test, which is required before you can take the actual theory test.

Driving Test Kingswells

To qualify for a driver’s license, you will have to take the official DVLA test. Take any of our driving courses for a chance to pass your test on the very first attempt. The hundreds of customers who have used our service and passed the test the first time provide sufficient evidence that our courses are designed to deliver results.

Booking your driving test

What do I have to do to book a test?

The best way to book your driving test is to do so through the official Gov.UK website. We recommend this because you may end up having to pay more if you use third-party websites. You should only book your driving test if you have already passed the hazard perception test and the theory test. Sound complicated? Don’t worry, our instructors at Smart Drive UK will be available to guide you through every stage of the process.

What is the duration of the tests?

The practical driving test is broken into five parts: an eyesight check, safety questions, driving ability, vehicle reversing, and independent driving. It is the same process for automatic transmission as it is for manual transmission. The driving test takes less than an hour, specifically 40 minutes.

What can I expect on test day?

First, you will have to show your theory test certificate and your provisional license, after which you will be required to read the number of a license plate some metres away, as a way to test your eyesight. Once you have passed through this stage, the examiner will test your knowledge by asking a number of show and tell questions. Following this, you will have to prove your skills as a driver and let the examiner know that you are capable of reversing a vehicle and driving on different types of roads effectively and safely. The examiner will ask you to drive on your own for about 20 minutes and, along the way, may ask you to complete an emergency stop. You can expect to spend about 40 minutes on the driving test. It is perfectly normal to be nervous during the practical driving test, but there is really nothing to it because everything you will have to do, you have already done through the course of your driving lessons.

What follows after the test?

Obtaining a full driving license

You should be proud now that you have passed your practical driving test. This means you are now qualified to apply for a proper driving license. Once the results of your practical driving test are sent to the DVLA, your license will be processed. You should expect to receive this within three weeks of passing the practical driving test. In order to ensure you have all the assistance you need, we at Smart Drive UK are always available to guide you through the process of obtaining a driving license. Our job is only complete when you are officially a qualified and licensed driver.

Is it sensible to do driving lessons before passing the theory test?

Often students are told by other companies that practical driving lessons shouldn’t be started until the theory test has been completed. It does make sense to understand driving and cars better before commencing practical driving lessons. Smart Drive UK takes a slightly different approach; we believe that the combination of theoretical and practical training at the same time can be more beneficial. The combination creates a synergy that makes it easier to grasp elements of driver training at the same time. Those that start practical driving lessons and then take the theory test tend to pass more easily.

How long should I expect driving lessons to last?

We understand it’s important to plan your driving lessons around your other daily activities. The length of lessons will be decided based on your aptitude and the instructor you work with. The training system that we use, and the structures of the courses we run, mean that most lessons tend to be around two hours. Give us a call if you would like lesson schedules that can get you to your goal faster over a longer period.

How frequently should my driving lessons be done?

We are well aware that your schedule is likely different from everyone else’s. However, progression as you learn to drive is best if you do a minimum of two hours per week. You need to work out whether this works for you. So, tailor the effort to fit two hours a week. You can opt for a more flexible schedule, which will be more than happy to accommodate. We can arrange driving lessons on several days in a row to speed your progress toward your practical driving test. No matter what your daily schedule looks like, we have you covered.

Is it possible to learn to drive in my car?

If you have your car you may feel more comfortable during driving lessons in it. This is not only understandable but also a great idea, especially if you plan to use the car for your driving test. If you have a new car that you are trying to get used to then this can make even more sense. We’re more than happy for you to use your vehicle for driving lessons and for practicing driving at Smart Drive UK.

However, this is only possible if the car is roadworthy, registered and comprehensively insured. Will verify that your car is right for your lessons by inspecting your papers, and your insurance company will have to be notified about the driving lessons in the car. We suggest you move lessons and your vehicle only when it is safe to do so, and we normally recommend that you begin lessons in a dual-controlled car and by your driving instructor.

Are all vehicles dual controlled?

Smart Drive UK driving instructors teach in dual control cars.

By taking notes after lessons on the feedback provided you can enhance your chances of taking on board the information. Then you can go into each new lesson having assimilated the information from the previous one. Your driver training process can also be improved by watching additional resources and your driving instructor can advise you on what to watch.

How do you know when you are ready for your practical driving test?

Your driving instructor will advise you when you are ready to book/take your practical driving test based on your progress level within your driving lessons. They understand what you will need to be able to do to partial test and will be continually assessing you against these levels

Can I do my practical driving test in the same car as my lessons?

Any fully insured car can be used for your driving test. Our guidance is that you choose to do your driving test in your driving instructor’s car, as that is what you have become familiar with.

Your driving test examiner will probably ask you if you would like your instructor to accompany you on the test. You can discuss the test with your driving instructor to decide whether it is a good idea or not. It is normally the case that automatic cars are easier and faster to learn than learning to drive a manual car.
