What are the types of cars available for people like me?
We have students who only want to learn how to drive in automatic vehicles, just as there are others who prefer to learn in only manual vehicles. We have both manual and automatic cars to learn in, so the choice of car comes down to you. Manual and automatic cars are equally popular across the UK, and your choice is completely to your wishes. Can’t work out the best option for you based on your requirements? Why don’t you discuss them with us, and we can help you make a decision. (please note automatic cars are subject to availability). You are just a phone call away from getting expert advice.
Can I begin my driving lessons before I have passed the theory test?
Many people will think about passing the theory test before taking practical driving lessons. There are benefits to this advice, as it is in your best interest to, first and foremost, understand how a car works before you get into it. However, our approach here at Smart Drive UK is to mix theoretical and practical training. With this, you can immediately see how the things you have learnt in theory can work in practice. Also, you will be better prepared for the theory test when you have started your driving lessons.
What is the length of time for each lesson?
We know it is important for you to know the duration of each lesson, so as to better plan your day. The length of time it will take to complete one lesson is dependent on your learning ability and how the teacher chooses to deliver the lesson. However, our skilled instructors, working with a properly planned course outline, ensure that you will spend only two hours on average on each task. If you’d like a faster instruction programme, get in touch with us to discuss your preferences.
How often should I have my driving lessons?
Everyone’s schedule differs. But two hours of driving training every week is the recommended minimum for learner drivers. Depending on your situation, you can decide to keep this schedule. Or we could help you arrange a more flexible schedule that better suits your needs. For example, we could arrange for back to back training every day that will speed up your training and have you prepared for your driving test faster. No matter what type of schedule you have, we can arrange something suitable for you.

Can I have lessons in my own car?
Under certain circumstances, you might want to receive driving lessons in your car. This could be a great idea, especially if you intend on using your car to take the driving test. You may also be looking to familiarise yourself with the vehicle, especially if it’s a new one. Whatever the reason, at Smart Drive UK, we are able to offer our customers driving lessons in their own car. However, this is only possible if the car is roadworthy, registered, and comprehensively insured. This will be verified through an inspection of your papers by our instructors, and after your insurance company has been notified that the car will be used for driving lessons.
Can I have more than one lesson a week?
If your schedule permits for more than one driving lesson per week, you are welcome to take the opportunity. Our Smart Drive UK fixed and flexible schedule plans can be personalised to suit even the busiest individual’s schedule. If you prefer a shorter training and practice programme that involves multiple driving lessons every week, we can arrange it. Our priority is to provide you the training you need at your preferred pace, and have you prepared to ace the driving test the first time. The impressive first time pass rate of our students is a clear indication you’re in capable hands with Smart Drive UK, regardless of the schedule or learning speed you choose.

What is Pass Plus?
Simply put, Pass Plus is a scheme targeted at new drivers in the UK who’ve passed their driving test. One of the problems new drivers face is finding the confidence to drive on the roads. Thankfully, Smart Drive UK can be there to turn you into a more mature and confident driver once you successfully conclude your driving test. Pass Plus training lets you leave your usual roads to experience other roads first hand, after your initial training has familiarised you with major road conditions. Want more information? New Hazard Perception Test
The Hazard Perception test is part of the UK theory test for learner drivers. It is a compulsory test that has to be passed before you can be granted a full driver’s license. This test involves a series of videos, detailing everyday road scenes and, in one case, a developing hazard. Responding appropriately to the developing hazard will determine if you pass the test. As part of our training at Smart Drive UK, we offer comprehensive preparation to all our students for the Hazard Perception Test, which comes before the practical driving test at the DVLA. At Smart Drive UK, you’ll have access to our Hazard Perception video collection, as well as a series of revision questions.

Make a test booking
What do I have to do to book a test?
The best way to book your driving test is to do so through the official Gov.UK website. Booking through a third-party website can end up costing you more. You are required to pass the theory test and hazard perception test before you can book the driving test. Can’t quite wrap your head around it? Don’t worry, our instructors at Smart Drive UK will be available to guide you through every stage of the process.
How long do the tests take?
You will have to pass through the five aspects of the practical driving test: driving ability, safety questions, an eyesight check, independent driving, and vehicle reversing. It is the same process for automatic transmission as it is for manual transmission. You’ll only spend about 40 minutes taking the actual driving test.
It’s test day, now what?
The first stage will test your eyesight by making you read from a number plate, but before that, you will have to show your theory test certificate and your provisional license. Next, you will have to demonstrate your knowledge by answering a series of show and tell questions, but only if you pass the eye test. The next stage involves proving that you can successfully reverse a car and drive without issue on different types of roads. During the test, you will be asked to engage in independent driving for about 20 minutes and the examiner may include an emergency stop. Approximately 40 minutes will be sufficient for you to complete the driving test. It is perfectly normal to be nervous during the practical driving test, but there is really nothing to it because everything you will have to do, you have already done through the course of your driving lessons.
What to do after the test
Obtaining a full driving license
Well done on getting through your practical driving test. This is what qualifies you to apply for a full driving license. The examiner will send the results of your practical driving test to the DVLA, who will process your license. You should expect to receive this within three weeks of passing the practical driving test. From day one, to the day you get your driving license, Smart Drive UK is always ready to guide you through the process. Until you have been officially licensed as a qualified driver, our job is not done.
