What are the available learner car types?
Some of our students prefer to learn with automatic transmission vehicles, while others prefer to learn with manual transmission vehicles. Your choice of learning car is ultimately down to you, as we have both types. Both manual and automatic cars are common on UK roads, and either choice will work well for whatever you need it for. Can’t make up your mind on one choice over the other? You can talk to us right away and we will be delighted to help (please note automatic cars are subject to availability). Call us right away to get started.
Is it possible to start my driving lessons before I have passed the theory test?
Generally, you will be advised to pass the theory test before you go for your practical driving lessons. There is nothing wrong with this, as it makes sense to understand how a car works before you get into the driver’s seat. Here at Smart Drive UK, however, we understand that it is best to combine both theoretical and practical training. The combination creates a synergy which makes it easier to grasp both elements of driving training at the same time. In addition, someone that is already experienced in driving lessons will have a higher chance of success when it is time for the theory test.
What is the length of time for each lesson?
Many people have a lot to do to make up their day, so it’s no surprise that you’ll want to know how long each lesson will take. The duration of each lesson is dependent on the teacher, as well as how fast you assimilate information. However, with our instructors, and our carefully crafted training system, you can expect to spend an average of 2 hours on each lesson. If you’d like a lesson schedule that is faster or slower, simply call us to discuss what you need.
How often should I have my driving lessons?
We are well aware that your schedule is likely different from everyone else’s. Nonetheless, if you are a learner driver, at least two hours of driving training per week can be very beneficial. Depending on your situation, you can decide to keep this schedule. Or you can opt for a more flexible schedule, which we’ll be more than happy to accommodate. Many of our clients that have the time prefer opting for back to back training every day, so they can be prepared for their driving test faster. Whatever your schedule is, we’ve got you covered.
Can I have lessons in my own car?
Under certain circumstances, you might want to receive driving lessons in your car. This is not only understandable, but also a great idea, especially if you plan to use the car for your driving test. It could also be that you have a new car and want to get familiar with it. Whatever the reason, at Smart Drive UK, we are able to offer our customers driving lessons in their own car. However, this is only possible if the car is roadworthy, registered, and comprehensively insured. Our instructors will need to inspect the car to check for valid registration, and may be required to notify your insurance company that the car will be used for driving lessons.
Can I have more than one lesson a week?
We are ready to accommodate you if you have the time for more than one lesson a week. At Smart Drive UK, we have both fixed and flexible schedules that can accommodate everyone. If you would like to complete your training fast by taking multiple lessons every week, we can arrange that. Our priority is that you learn at a pace you are most comfortable with and are prepared in time to take and pass your driving test on the first try. The first time pass rate of our students is a clear indication you are in good hands when you choose Smart Drive UK.

Booking your Test
What is the process of booking a test like?
Go to the official Gov.UK website to book your driving test. Booking through a third-party website can end up costing you more. Booking a driving test comes after you have passed the hazard perception test and theory test. Sound confusing? You don’t have to worry too much, because our instructors at Smart Drive UK will be on hand to guide you through it all.
What is the duration of the tests?
For the driving test to be completed, you have to complete five steps, including vehicle reversing, independent driving, safety questions, driving ability, and an eyesight check. The process is the same for both manual and automatic transmission. The actual driving test takes an average of 40 minutes to complete.
It’s test day, now what?
The first stage will test your eyesight by making you read from a number plate, but before that, you will have to show your theory test certificate and your provisional license. Next, you will have to demonstrate your knowledge by answering a series of show and tell questions, but only if you pass the eye test. After this, the examiner will test your ability to reverse a car and drive on different kinds of roads in a safe and effective manner. During the test, you will be asked to engage in independent driving for about 20 minutes and the examiner may include an emergency stop. The entire driving test should last about 40 minutes. Remember that while the practical driving test can be nerve-racking, all you will be asked to do has already been covered as you went through your driving course.
So you have completed the test
What to expect before obtaining your full driving license
Congratulations on passing your practical driving test. This means you are now qualified to apply for a proper driving license. The results of your practical driving test will be sent to the DVLA, where your license will be processed. Within three weeks of completing the practical test, you should receive your license. At Smart Drive UK, we are always available to guide you through the process up until you receive your driving license. Until you have been officially licensed as a qualified driver, our job is not done.
