What type of car will I be learning in?
Some of our students prefer to learn with automatic transmission vehicles, while others prefer to learn with manual transmission vehicles. Ultimately, you will determine the choice of car in which you’ll be learning. Whatever option you choose to go with, you will be in good company, as there are lots of manual and automatic drivers in the UK. Can’t work out the best option for you based on your requirements? Is it right to begin my driving lessons before I have passed the theory test?
You will generally be advised to hold on your practical driving lessons until you have passed your theory test. There are benefits to this advice, as it is in your best interest to, first and foremost, understand how a car works before you get into it. However, at Smart Drive UK, we believe it’s better to combine both theoretical and practical training. The combination creates a synergy which makes it easier to grasp both elements of driving training at the same time. Also, you will be better prepared for the theory test when you have started your driving lessons.

What is the length of time for each lesson?

New Hazard Perception Test
You can’t pass the UK driving test without passing the Hazard Perception Test. You cannot be issued a full driver’s license without passing the Hazard Perception test. A series of videos will be shown during the test, depicting everyday road scenes and a developing hazard. You need to respond appropriately to the developing hazard to pass the test. How do I book a test?
The best way to book your driving test is to do so through the official Gov.UK website. Booking through a third-party website can end up costing you more. Booking a driving test comes after you have passed the hazard perception test and theory test. Can’t quite wrap your head around it? How long will it take before the tests are completed?
The practical driving test is broken into five parts: an eyesight check, safety questions, driving ability, vehicle reversing, and independent driving. The process is the same for both manual and automatic transmission. You’ll only spend about 40 minutes taking the actual driving test.
What happens on test day?
The first stage will test your eyesight by making you read from a number plate, but before that, you will have to show your theory test certificate and your provisional license. If you pass this stage, you will be asked a series of ‘show and tell’ questions by the examiner to demonstrate your knowledge. Next, you will be made to prove to the examiner that you can drive safely and effectively no matter the terrain, as well as successfully reverse a vehicle. The test includes 20 minutes of independent driving, possibly with an emergency stop. The driving test will last around 40 minutes.
